5 Reasons to Love (and Sew) the Everyday Apron

Before I get into why you need (the Everyday) aprons in your life, I wanted to take a moment to share a little bit about an inspirational young cancer survivor, Bridgette, who’s Grandma Cathie is a very talented seamstress and member of our Handmaiden’s Cottage Pattern Group.  Bridgette’s Journey, or “Bridgi” as she is affectionately called by her “Grammie,”  has been an inspiration to many as this strong nine years young fighter is not only tumor-free but she raised an impressive $4800 for her charity, the Michael Hoefflin Foundation for Children’s Cancer. Awesome job Bridgette!  Please take the time to read about "Bridgette's Journey" here

To celebrate Bridgette’s cancer-free victory, a trip was planned for a fun girls day to the American Girl Store for shopping and dining at the American Girl Café`.  To make the adventure just a little more special, Cathie sewed up the Girls Everyday Apron and 18" Dolly Apron for her granddaughters and the daughters of long time family friends to make the event even more special.  She made five girls aprons and five dolly aprons to match, of course! Cathie embroidered each of the girls’ names on the waistband, which is such a lovely touch, don’t you think?

One little, two little, three little aprons….

Now onto why you NEED (the Everyday) aprons in your life

1. Confident - Beginner Seamstress Friendly

Who doesn't love a confidence sew? The Women and Girls Everyday Apron PDF Pattern Set is exactly the kind of project that will make you feel super accomplished when you’re finished. The instant- download PDF pattern includes a one size fits most for women and includes the 3T-8yrs for girls. The Everyday Apron includes fabric charts and instructions for 16" wide toweling fabric and 44" Wide Cotton Fabric.

I LOVE sewing beautiful vintage-style garments but as a relatively new sewist, sometimes sewing clothing takes me F-O-R-E-V-E-R. While I love detailed projects, it's nice to take a break as a pseudo-fashion designer (in my own mind, anyway) to stitch up a fun project that I can rapidly complete. This project is good for the "Sew-L."

2. Practically Speaking

The Women and Girls Everyday Apron is not just perfect for cleaning, but also for cooking, crafting, painting, and even gardening. Now, I don't know about you, but my daily routine consists of the typical domesticatin' mommin' multi-taskin' troubleshootin' mayhem. Large families often invite this kinda vibe and is coupled with infinite opportunities to get, um…well, messy. One of my favorite features of this pattern is the HUGE pockets! Each pocket measures 9” by 12.5, say what? I can zip around the house collecting misplaced items to return at a later time instead of immediately having to return to their rightful place. This prevents housekeeper amnesia: when you are tidying up an area, find something that doesn’t belong, return said item to its original place, start cleaning a new area and forget about the room you were focusing on in the first place. Anyone else do this? Now I can stay efficiently on task ;)  The “Every Day Apron” PDF pattern for the win!

3. Easy and Quick Gift Idea

I made couple of these aprons for gifts. The pockets easily keep supplies on hand.

I thought the Melody Miller, Playful, Playroom in Pink by Cotton & Steel was the perfect choice for my son's teacher.  It’s fun, it’s cute, and it’s practical.

I added the bias tape to the interior to give it a more finished look since I haven't found the time to sit down and teach myself how to use a serger. I am going to add this to my #summerbucketlist.

Our admin, Stacy, just finished up half version of the Everyday Apron for a gift for her daughter’s teacher. She even added a front pocket, not included in the pattern instructions,  but a simple yet highly functional pocket. She then used HTV and a Cricut cutting machine for even more personalization. Super cute!

For a fun holiday look I added faux fur trim and snowflake buttons on this matching set for my sister-in-law and niece for Christmas.

4. Domesticating in Style

Why not create a cute apron to look like you've got it all together? The Everyday Apron not only saves clothing but it also LOOKS pretty.  I definitely fell into the classic "mom look" for quite a few years, but along with my resolution of "Try New Things," it is time to put away my usual look of loose shirt, leggings, knit headband, and ponytail. This apron has a sweetheart detail for that extra feminine touch. Why not make one for you and your little helper around the house to make chores seem extra fun?

One of our favorite bloggers, Amy, created this adorable upcycled Apron Set using vintage linens. Read all about her versions of the Mommy and Me Everyday Apron here. Aren't they adorable? Amy has been very busy updating her shop using vintage handkerchiefs and giving them new life as classic coin purses and handbags. Check out her new shop, Elegance Anew. If you are local to Lynn’s new store, Three Labs Salvage, in St. Clairsville Ohio, you can see these beauties up close and personal. Stay tuned for Three Labs Salvage website coming very soon ;)

5. Perfect Sew-to-Sell Item for Small Boutiques*

Do you have a home-based sewing business? Some of you may or may not know, that Lynn started the Handmaiden’s Cottage as a home-based boutique Etsy shop. The dresses and items that she made and sold became patterns that are available to purchase today. I do not personally sew to sell yet, but I think I am becoming much closer to being able to make a few items that I would consider high-quality enough to sell for a price that would be worth the materials and the time it takes to make. The Everyday Apron fits the bill and the one’s I made below are my favorite to date.  C'est la Vie Winter in Canvas, Joie de Vivre by Bari J. for Art Gallery Fabrics has become one of my favorite fabrics to date.  Each stitch I made on this gorgeous fabric was more exciting than the last as they joined the fabric pieces together into  beautifully finished aprons.

My daughter, Alivia, and I in the Everyday Aprons. To give you an idea of the length, I should note that I am 5'10" tall. Alivia is modeling the Girls Everyday Apron in a size 8.

My daughter, Alivia, is wearing Girls Size 8 Everyday Apron.

Now available with the Everyday Apron Bundle is the 18" Doll Pattern Pieces

Please note: The updated pattern incudes the pattern pieces only. NO instructions are included but if you have made the Everyday Aprons, it will be a breeze to do the dolly version. If you have already purchased the Everyday Apron Set, please be on the lookout for the updated pattern link in your email inbox.

Sooooo....Is everyone suddenly feeling a need  and newfound excitement to make an Everyday Apron? Well, guess what??? We are going to have an Everyday Apron Sew-Along over at the Handmaiden's Cottage Pattern Group. Be sure to join the group so you can get all the details coming soon. The Everyday Apron PDF Pattern Set is on sale now for $4.99 and the Sew Along will begin Tuesday, May 28, 2018.  Hope to see you there.

Thanks for stopping by!
