September is here and there's reason to celebrate! It's officially National Sewing Month which is now in it's 35th year of honoring the sewing and crafts industry. Thank YOU, Mr. President (Reagan)! This month it will be even easier excuse to yourself to your creative space to fully indulge in your passions, like, all day... every day....for the next 30 days...Stitchin' up a storm! I'll be sure to use this to my advantage in my household. *wink, wink.* Who's with me?
As I reflect on my inaugural year with the The Handmaiden's Cottage team, I realized that I still I have so much to learn but it's been an amazing creative ride so far! If you're like me and find yourself wanting to research everything, I found this article on the history of sewing called, Stitches in Time......100 years of Machines and Sewing that was pretty interesting. I'm still pretty green to the sewing community but am eager to become more versed in the art.
If you are just beginning and not sure where to start, the American Sewing Guild (ASG) is a great place to begin if you live in the United States. They have local chapters that are membership-based where you have access to member only discounts and magazine, can learn online, join your neighbors for events, and share your passion with like minded people. You can even start with a 60 day trial membership to see all that ASG as to offer. Check out this video for a glimpse inside the guild. If you are a quilter, a list of domestic and international quilting guilds can be found here.
While looking for ideas for this month, I came across some inspiring events, charitable sewing opportunities, and an awesome contest that I had to share. The Handmaiden's Cottage will be joining in on some of the fun, too!
